INTRODUCTION
For many people with asthma, a poor environment where they live, work, or go to
school can trigger asthma attacks and seriously affect their quality of life.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency created the National Environmental Leadership
Award in Asthma Management to recognize leading health plans and health care providers
addressing environmental triggers as part of their comprehensive asthma care programs.
Winners of the prestigious National Environmental Leadership Award in Asthma Management
serve as models for health plans and providers looking for ways to improve health
outcomes for people with asthma.
The National Institutes of Health's (NIH's) Expert Panel Report 3 (EPR 3): Guidelines
for the Diagnosis and Management of
Asthma highlight the
importance of managing environmental factors that contribute to the
severity of asthma, and
many health plans and providers include environmental management
in their asthma care
programs. But much more needs to be done. We invite you to join us
in demonstrating that
managing environmental triggers as part of a comprehensive asthma
management program can
improve the lives of the more than 20 million people in America with
asthma.
EPA accepted applications for the 2008 awards through February 1, 2008. Winners will be notified in writing in mid-April 2008. WHO CAN APPLY?
The National Environmental Leadership Award in Asthma Management is open to all
health plans and health care providers with comprehensive asthma management programs
that are consistent with the NIH Guidelines. Plans and providers that previously
applied may apply for the 2008 awards. Companies providing disease management
services are not eligible to apply.
